DESCRIPTION:
Thornhill is a lovely period house. The oldest part was originally an 18th century cottage. In the 19th century the property belonged to the Chivas family, who extended it so as to create a fine family house. Above the door is a date stone of 1879 with the initials JC and JC. The Chivas family were grocers in Aberdeen, who were appointed Royal Warrant holders to Queen Victoria in 1843. James Chivas diversified into blending whiskies for his customers and Thornhill was originally a water supply. He traded with his brother John, as Chivas Brothers from 1857. The company first produced their world famous blend, Chivas Regal, in 1909.It is a most attractive house which still retains much of its period features and character, including a turret with a fish scale turreted roof. The sellers have lived at Thornhill since 1955 and it is a home that is full of character. A particular feature are the lovely grounds which surround the property and next to the house there are ideal sheltered and paved seating and entertaining areas. There are trees providing privacy and shelter, and beneath them are a myriad of spring bulbs. The main garden is to the rear of the house, whilst to the east are outbuildings with stables and a swimming pool and tennis court. Thornhill is a great family house and is ideal for entertaining with good sized and elegant reception rooms. From the roadway that runs past the property wooden gates open onto a gravelled parking area adjacent to the house.
