Home For Sale in Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Auction Lot ID: 1121
MIDDLETON House in Teesdale has had more that its fair share of visitors in its 190 year history, from cabinet ministers to landed gentry and even modern day royalty. Designed by Ignatius Bonomi and built around, 1815, Middleton House is a large coursed sandstone building, with open views to the south, on an imposing elevated site, in the heart of beautiful Teesdale.
Acquired by the London Lead Company to establish its Northern headquarters, the house and outbuildings then reverted to Raby ownership, and in 1946 were used as a hotel and shooting lodge.
In the late 1960s the property was bought by Sir Joseph Nickerson as his own personal shooting lodge, from where he entertained a number of dignitaries during the grouse season including the Prince Charles. It was even rumored that the house was modified to improve security for Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their courting days, to escape the press. Following the death of Sir Joseph in 1990, the house was bought by a local entrepreneur who divided the property into three the main house and the east and west wings.
The next proprietors undertook extensive refurbishment developing the house and the mews. The current owners purchased the main house in 1999 and the west wing in 2000.
The house is entered through a magnificent double door sandstone porch-way into the main hall with its welcoming fireplace, solid wooden floor, deep skirting boards and original cornicing.
This leads to the main inner hallway with its solid wood paneling and myriad doors leading to sumptuously grand living.
The magnificent dining room is lavishly decorated with double windows. Original features abound with deep skirting boards, ornate cornices, tiled hearth and a chandelier hung ceiling rose. Through interconnecting doors is a smaller room currently being used as an office and cosy informal sitting room with a large window.
The vast country kitchen/diner has a craftsman-made solid pine fitted kitchen with large central island and access to a large utility with double stone original sink, inner courtyard and external garage.
A small passage leads to three large cellars, workshop, boot room, cloakroom and access to the one acre private walled garden with mature shrubs and trees.
The splendid main staircase leads to the first floor, again, with countless doors leading to five double bedrooms, two with en suite. Among the most notable is the oval shaped guest bedroom, with its three magnificent windows overlooking the private gardens and large en-suite. There is also the oval living room mirroring the view from the guest suite', a large half tiled family bathroom and a door with access to the bridge' which leads to the vast walled gardens.
Handily secreted is also a first floor laundry room with plumbing for an automatic washer and dryer and ample shelf storage for a large family.
At the end of the main landing is a door leading to a less grand winding staircase to the original servants' quarters. This leads to the second floor rooms, noticeably smaller in scale than the grander areas of the house but still providing two additional double bedrooms, one en-suite, and with the potential to turn into a granny flat. There is also a children's playroom/study and a library, both rooms that could become extra bedrooms if required.
THE WEST WING, WHICH IS AVAILABLE BY SEPARATE NEGOTIATION, was once part of the main house but now a separate dwelling, this three bedroomed property features an entrance hall, inner hall, sitting room, kitchen and two bathrooms. Both properties have glorious views over the Pennine moorlands and easy access to nearby Middleton in Teesdale.
