Home For Sale in Barrow-in-furness, Cumbria. Auction Lot ID: 15036
When Jane speaks about the Gate House, it's clear she's describing a much loved home. "I really love the way it looks," she says. "It's made out of red sandstone and has such a lot of history. The buildings used to make up the stables and outhouses of Abbey House which was designed by Lutyens in 1914. I've been told they used to have royal visitors there. They used to get the train to make a special stop at Furness Abbey and send the coach and horses out from these stables to meet them. I love that sense of the past.”
"WE TRANSFORMED THIS HOUSE FROM SOME STABLES AND OUTBUILDINGS INTO A STUNNING PLACE TO LIVE.”
"EVERYONE SAYS WE'RE MAD TO MOVE - IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS HOUSE."
But the Gate House is also a very modern home. "It's the perfect marriage of old and new," adds Jane. "Basically we converted the old stables and outhouses into this lovely house. It's now very much in keeping with the traditional elements, but it's got really striking modern features too. For example we've connected two of the old red sandstone buildings by putting in huge glass walls. The result is a whole complex of new rooms - the old courtyard is where bedrooms are now.
"PEOPLE WHO SEE IT ARE AMAZED – ITS JUST NOT WHAT THEY EXPECT"
Where we could, we kept true to the old materials - all of the wooden flooring and doors are made from 100 year old reclaimed pine. It looks gorgeous. Then there are the special bricks they used in the stable courtyard - they're designed so that horses don't slip on them. We've recycled them and re-laid them in the drive. It's a house where the old and new combine really well together. People who see it are amazed - it's just not what they expect."
The features such as the huge glass walls certainly make it an interesting house to live in. "We have open countryside behind us," explains Jane. "It's a view full of fields. When you're in the dining room in the morning you get to see the most amazing sunrises over breakfast - and all through this big glass window. And in the evenings you can have dinner and watch the wildlife, or once it gets dark you can eat looking at the stars and owls. Because it's open countryside you're not overlooked at all. It's a very private house. It's tucked away behind a large Roman wall and it's only once you're in the garden that you really see the house.

"Then there's the surrounding area. We're so spoilt here; we have the most amazing, beautiful beaches within easy reach - it's only a 15 minute drive to the coast road which leads onto miles and miles of sand. Furness Abbey is only a ten minute walk away - it's a beautiful building that's made out of the same type of sandstone. Of course we're only a 20 minute drive from the Lake District here as well. Barrow-in-Furness is a five minute drive away but I often walk. It's a lovely route; it's lined with trees and takes about 40 minutes. We've got several schools within easy walking distance - they include a private one as well as a secondary school and a sixth form college. We're also on the border of two school catchment areas so you get even more choice."

So aren't Jane's friends right - isn't she mad to leave? "Yes, sometimes I think we are," she laughs. "We transformed this house from some stables and outbuildings into a stunning place to live. I love this house so much, but what I also love is the whole process of doing places up. I was actually the forewoman on this job and I really enjoyed it. Now I want to transform somewhere else - I'm looking for my next challenge."
