SITUATION: The Cottage occupies a wonderful elevated position on the edge of the conservation village of New Galloway, in the heart of the valley of the River Ken. The area, comprising several scenic historic villages, is known as The Glenkens. A total of seven roads converge on the area, viz, from Dumfries, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Ayr, and Thornhill. New Galloway is largely built around a single High Street that climbs up through the village. It lies at the northern tip of Loch Ken and nestles on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park. This gives it a wonderful air of seclusion. The village is Scotland's (and arguably Britain's) smallest Royal Burgh, ever since King Charles I conferred the Royal Charter in 1629 to Lord Kenmure. As the focal point of The Glenkens, it hosts the burgeoning Glenkens Community and Arts Trust, a modern dispensing medical practice, an excellent primary school renowned for its music, and two churches. There is a general store, three hotels and pubs, a post office, an historic town hall, and a Scout hall. In nearby St John's Town of Dalry there is a secondary school. The - food town - of Castle Douglas (14 miles) has two supermarkets and is known for its range of delicatessens and specialist food shops. Dumfries (28 miles) is a busy regional centre with high street stores, including Marks & Spencer.Kirkcudbrightshire, known locally as - The Stewartry - , remains one of Scotland's least spoilt and most charming areas, with a combination of hills, lochs, woodlands, and coastline. The area is renowned for its field sports which include salmon fishing on the Rivers Cree, Nith, Annan, and Esk, pheasant shooting on local estates, and excellent wildfowling on the Solway Firth. There are a number of golf courses in the area including a scenic nine hole course at New Galloway itself. Loch Ken is a favourite spot for coarse fishing, and has a sailing centre and a water ski school. The area is rich in bird life and becoming known for its Red Kite Trail. The Cottage is easily accessible by both road and air. Edinburgh and Glasgow are 117 miles and 80 miles by road respectively, and the A75 links with the national motorway network heading south to the M6 and west to the Euro-port of Stranraer, with ferry links to Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.Prestwick Airport is about one hour's drive to the north-west and has regular daily flights to London Stansted and an increasing range of European destinations.
DESCRIPTION: The Cottage is a Voysey inspired Arts and Crafts house of considerable size and character. - The Cottage - is therefore a charming misnomer. It was built in 1897 for the then Provost of New Galloway. The stone built property has been whitewashed and finished with beautiful rosemary roof tiles, making it a very striking property. The roof tiles were completely renewed in 1997, and two large Velux windows were installed in the large attic. The house sits beautifully in the centre of magnificent gardens. Internally, the accommodation is very much in keeping with its period and offers spacious, flexible accommodation, ideally suited for modern family living. Gardens and Grounds - Give this house, oh traveller pray,A Blessing as you pass this way,And if you've time, I beg your pardon,While you're at it, bless the garden - The Cottage sits wonderfully in the middle of a quite spectacular garden. The garden is split between a number of tiered lawns, each hidden amongst a series of mature trees and bordered by colourful flower beds and a number of exceptional rhododendrons. There is a rotating Edwardian summer house on rails overlooking a splendid croquet lawn. Paths link the separate areas of lawn and extend through the woodland section sections of the garden. Many of these woodland areas are carpeted with sowdrops, daffodils, and bluebells during the spring and early summer months.Building PlotApproximately 70 yards up the left fork in the driveway there is a gap in a wall, leading to an area of cleared woodland that has been granted outline planning consent for a single residential unit.OutbuildingsGreenhouse. Stone built garden shed with tiled roof, and a timber framed summer house
