SITUATION:
Ruthven is renowned for Ruthven Barracks which were built by the Government after the 1715 Jacobite rising in an attempt to keep the Highland population under control. The buildings were completed in 1724 with an additional guard house and stable block completed a decade later. Three of General Wade's military roads also converge at the barracks. The barracks could house 120 troops and 28 horses. Jacobite troops seized the barracks, on their second attempt, in February 1746 and after the failure at Culloden, about 3,000 Jacobites met at Ruthven with the intention of fighting on. They were greeted by a message from Bonnie Prince Charlie telling them to save themselves, so they set fire to the barracks and dispersed. The buildings were never reoccupied and fell into ruin. Today's building is pretty much as it was left by the departing Jacobites. Most of the exterior walls remain, but little of the interior structure, and no flooring or roofing. Ruthven House is situated on the fringe of Kingussie, within the Cairngorms National Park, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The area is renowned for its natural beauty, mountain ranges, forests, river valleys and lochs. There is an abundance of outdoor activities including golf, cycling, trekking, off-road driving, skiing and snowboarding in winter, fishing on the River Spey, as well as many scenic walks. There are also several RSPB Nature Reserves in the area, including Loch Garten which is famous for ospreys. The central location means that touring from here to all the famous landmarks in the Highlands, such as Loch Ness, Ben Nevis and the Isle of Skye is particularly easy.Kingussie has shopping for everyday requirements including a medical practice, chemist, dentist, banks, vet, supermarket, library and churches. Local schools include Kingussie Primary School and Kingussie High School. There is a railway station at Kingussie on the main line offering a direct service to Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. There are good road links to Inverness and Aviemore to the north, and south to Perth to connect with the central motorway network. Inverness Airport offers a wide variety of flights both within the UK and to Belfast and Dublin.
