SITUATION: Upper Senwick lies on the south-west coast of Scotland, close to the shores of Kirkcudbright Bay at the edge of the Solway Firth. The farm is situated about five miles south-west of the local town of Kirkcudbright, the county town of Kirkcudbrightshire. Collectively with Wigtownshire, the area was historically known as the Kingdom of Galloway, and now forms the western portion of the present-day local authority area of Dumfries and Galloway.As well as offering a range of local shopping and business services, Kirkcudbright has both primary and secondary schools with excellent reputations. Castle Douglas (12 miles) and Dumfries both have a wide range of shops and local services. Dumfries and Galloway is a truly rural region, well known for dairy and livestock farming, magnificent forests and dramatic coastlines. The rolling landscape, extensive woodland and unspoilt coastline provides a wealth of opportunities for outdoor pursuits. The quiet country roads are popular for walkers and cyclists, there is golf on local courses at Kirkcudbright, Brighouse Bay and Gatehouse-of-Fleet, and there is sea fishing and sailing along the coast. Kirkcudbright Marina reputedly offers one of the safest anchorages on the north Solway coast, and the town is also seen as a natural base from which to explore the Galloway Forest Park.Communication links in the area are good. The railway station in Dumfries has regular services to Glasgow and London, and the M74 links the north and south by road and lies only about 50 miles to the east. The nearest international airports are at Prestwick (about 63 miles) and Glasgow (about 115 miles). Prestwick has regular flights to London Stansted as well as an increasing amount of foreign destinations. Stranraer lies about 43 miles to the west and is the ferry terminal for Northern Ireland with services to Larne and Belfast.
DESCRIPTION: Upper Senwick benefits from the favourable Gulf Stream climate; the area is noted for its mild weather and long growing season which has contributed to the south-west being one of the most productive livestock areas in the United Kingdom.A recently renovated six bedroom farmhouse lies at the heart of the farm, and modern and traditional steadings offer a combination of practicality and future development potential. DIRECTIONS: From the north or south on the M74, follow signs for Dumfries. At Dumfries, follow signs for the A75 towards Stranraer. After by-passing Castle Douglas, about 20 miles west of Dumfries, turn left onto the A711 signposted for Kirkcudbright. In Kirkcudbright turn right opposite the Church onto the A755 signed Gatehouse of Fleet. After crossing the Dee Estuary turn left onto the B727 signed Borgue and Brighouse Bay. After about 3 miles turn left, sign Brighouse Bay and Ross Bay, and continue along the minor public road for about 1 mile. Take the left fork, signed for Ross Bay, and the entrance to Upper Senwick is immediately on the left. |
